Author Biography

Eleanor Smollett, University of Regina

Eleanor Smollett is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan. She conducted field work in India in 1964. In connection with this work, she met Kathleen Gough and they remained friends. Since 1971, her research focus has been on socialist development, especially in Bulgaria. The most recent of her articles on this subject include: * 'America the Beautiful?Made in Bulgaria'' in Anthropology Today 9(2), 1993; "Life Cycle and Career Cycle in Socialist Bulgaria" in Culture 9(2), 1989; and "The Economy of Jars: Kindred Relationships in Bulgaria" in Ethnologia Europaea 19(2), 1989.
