Primary research among North American Indians, Inuit and rural Anglos, secondary comparative research among language, culture and environment of North American Indians. Author of Salish Language and Culture (1969), The Sun Dance Religion: Power for the Powerless (1972), Western Indians (1980) and Oil Age Eskimos (1990).
