Author Biography

Joan Mencher, City University of New York

Joan P. Mencher is Professor of Anthropology at Lehman College of CUNY and the City University of New York's Graduate Program in Anthropology. She has worked in South Asia for more than 13 years since 1958, including four and one half years in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Her research has included work on women and the family, on agriculture and agricultural development and on health. She has written Agriculture and Social Structure in Tamil Nadu (1978), edited Social Anthropology of Peasantry (1983) and (with A. Okongwu) co-edited Where Have All the Men Gone: Female headed Households Cross-culturally (1993).
